It’s been more than a decade since Dr. Jonathan Wright introduced the concept of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) with the book Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45 (Wright JVW, Morgenthaler J. Smart Publications, 1997), at a time when only a handful of clear thinking, knowledgeable doctors had ever heard about bio-identical hormones.

Many women first learned the truth about HRT and BHRT from that first book; others later heard about it from TV celebrity Suzanne Somers, who described her personal experiences with a different version of BHRT in the first of a series of books. But the real stampede away from HRT and toward BHRT began in 2002 with the premature termination of a large, government-funded study—the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)—the results of which confirmed that the risks of conventional HRT unquestionably outweighed its benefits.

In their new updated book, authors Wright and Lenard will bring to light many examples of “forgotten” or “ignored” scientific studies combined with up-to-date clinical experience that provide solid support for the safety and benefits of BHRT.

Smart Publications is very excited to publish the new BHRT book in early 2010!

Book Review

Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
The Science Explained

By Jonathan V. Wright, MD & Lane Lenard, PhD

Can a book actually change your life? This one can!

Written by renowned alternative health doctor Jonathan V. Wright and esteemed medical writer Lane Lenard, PhD, Stay Young and Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement is the result of nearly 30 years of research and clinical experience, and it will absolutely enhance the health and well-being of anyone who reads it.

Unflinchingly honest, the authors of Stay Young and Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement dispel the rumors and set the record straight regarding bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Like any good book describing a complex medical subject for a non-medical audience, the authors have gone to great lengths to clarify and explain the concepts that allow the reader to understand and absorb the material presented.

The first part of the book explores the history of hormone replacement. These first few chapters read like a good old-fashioned who-done-it, as villains, victims, motives, and conspiracies are revealed. What’s interesting about this approach is that it makes you, the reader, feel like the hero as you uncover the facts that have allowed pharmaceutical companies and their co-conspirators in the FDA to foist horse hormones upon generations of unsuspecting women with disastrous consequences.

And feeling like a hero is empowering! As you read on and better understand the role hormones play in the body, this feeling of knowledge and empowerment fills you with the strength and determination to take personal responsibility for your own hormonal health. It’s a fascinating journey. One wrought with twists and turns as powerful forces play word games in attempt to deceive you into thinking the hormones they manufacture are safe and effective.

For example, the authors spend more than a dozen pages outlining the “hormonal shell games” the pharmaceutical companies play to convince you that what they are selling are “natural” hormones and that bio-identical hormones are inferior. Once you understand that they can get away with this because indeed, a horse hormone is natural (at least for a horse), you are in a much better position to evaluate bio-identical hormones (hormones identical to those produced in the human body) that are produced from vegetable sources.

Armed with the background information and alerted to the dangers of the “patent medicine” hormone industry, Stay Young & Sexy deftly moves you toward the positive health benefits of bio-identical hormones and ever closer to the promise the title implies.

Authors Wright and Lenard know that most women initially are drawn to hormone replacement because they want to maintain their health, retain their youthful beauty, and relieve the unpleasant symptoms of menopause.

It is with this in mind that the bulk of the book is focused on clearly and concisely explaining how bio-identical hormones can help women look better, feel better and protect their health.

Entire chapters are devoted to relieving the most common symptoms of menopause, preventing and reversing osteoporosis, and how bio-identical hormones can protect you from heart disease.

Not to be left out though, are men. There is also a chapter entitled “Hormones for Him: Why Men Need BHRT, Too” that delves into the importance of replacing testosterone as men age.

But again, the bulk of the book explains how hormones work in the body, how aging diminishes the supply of hormones available, and why bio-identical hormone replacement can protect you from disease and help you “Stay Young & Sexy.”

The book also tackles head on the cancer-causing effects of traditional hormone replacement and makes a solid argument in favor of bio-identical hormone replacement to reduce cancer risk and prevent cancer. While this chapter is somewhat complicated, the authors do a terrific job addressing the hormonal causes of breast and ovarian cancer. Again, the villains are shown for what they are and pharmaceutical drugs like Premarin®, Provera® and Prempro® are held accountable for their cancer-causing affects. Likewise, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), drugs developed by drug companies to ward of the cancer-causing effects of their hormone drugs, are also shown to be far inferior in not only their ability to protect against cancer, but to also have their own unique set of dangerous side effects.

At the heart of the book is the concept that taking bio-identical versions of three human estrogen hormones—estriol, estradiol, and estrone—along with bio-identical progesterone, in customized and balanced dosages, can allow a postmenopausal woman to feel better, protect her body from disease, and retain her youthful look and feeling.

The doctors explain how to get the most out of bio-identical hormone replacement by recommending various tests to measure hormone levels in the body. They also spend time explaining what they call the “triad” relationship between you, your BHRT doctor, and a competent compounding pharmacist. They detail how to identify a doctor who specializes in BHRT and provide information to help the reader find a compounding pharmacy that can create their customized bio-identical hormone replacement prescription.

Doctors Wright and Lenard have spent nearly five years creating Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement and the effort clearly shows. Each chapter is meticulously referenced, and they have taken the time to create a companion website at www.stayyoungandsexy.com.

Author and actress Suzanne Somers—herself a patient of Dr. Wright and a well known champion of bio-identical hormones—wrote the foreword to the book and said, “Dr. Jonathan V. Wright and Dr. Lane Lenard will one day be known as the doctors who changed medicine against all odds and against violent opposition.”

Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement– The Science Explained is 536 pages that truly has the potential to change the lives of millions of people for the better. It delivers upon the promise in the title and readers who follow the advice the book offers will indeed “Stay Young & Sexy”!
