It’s been more than a decade since Dr. Jonathan Wright introduced the concept of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) with the book Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45 (Wright JVW, Morgenthaler J. Smart Publications, 1997), at a time when only a handful of clear thinking, knowledgeable doctors had ever heard about bio-identical hormones.
Many women first learned the truth about HRT and BHRT from that first book; others later heard about it from TV celebrity Suzanne Somers, who described her personal experiences with a different version of BHRT in the first of a series of books. But the real stampede away from HRT and toward BHRT began in 2002 with the premature termination of a large, government-funded study—the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)—the results of which confirmed that the risks of conventional HRT unquestionably outweighed its benefits.
In their new updated book, authors Wright and Lenard will bring to light many examples of “forgotten” or “ignored” scientific studies combined with up-to-date clinical experience that provide solid support for the safety and benefits of BHRT.
Smart Publications is very excited to publish the new BHRT book in early 2010! |

Finding a Doctor
Although the American Medical Association would probably like you to believe otherwise, there are qualified medical professionals who are not members and might even have letters other than MD after their name. Many of these doctors have a far better understanding of bio-identical hormones, and usually considerably more experience in using them than the average “regular” MD.
A quick and easy way to find a knowledgeable, open-minded doctor is to locate one who is a member of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), the International College of Integrative Medicine (ICIM), the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), and some members of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP).
The American College for Advancement in Medicine
ACAM is a not-for-profit medical society dedicated to educating physicians and other health care professionals on the latest findings and emerging procedures in preventive/nutritional medicine, including BHRT. ACAM’s goals are to improve doctors’ skills, knowledge, and diagnostic procedures as they relate to complementary and alternative medicine; to support research; and to develop awareness of alternative methods of medical treatment.
The largest and oldest organization of its kind in the world dedicated exclusively to serving the educational needs of the health professions, ACAM represents more than 1,000 physicians in 30 countries. All ACAM members are skilled and experienced in the prescription and use of bio-identical hormones, as well as of various nutritional, herbal, and botanical products. ACAM members have studied and listened to discussions by dozens of experts [including the author (JVW) on occasion] concerning the biochemistry, effects, and uses of these substances.

The International College of Integrative Medicine
ICIM is a community of healthcare professionals dedicated to advancing emergent innovative therapies in integrative and preventive healthcare by conducting educational sessions, supporting research and publications and cooperating with other professional and scientific organizations, while always promoting the highest standards of practice. They offer advanced medical care, which combines the best of conventional, preventive, and innovative health care. Their goals are to dramatically improve the quality of life of their patients, prevent illness, extend lives, provide safe, effective treatments, and reduce costs. They believe that every patient has the right to receive and they have the responsibility to offer advanced, healing medicine, and they advocate a massive research and educational effort to explore the many variables and techniques that can be used together to promote healing and achieve high-level wellness.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine
AAEM was founded in 1965 by a group of clinicians from various specialties, who formed a medical society that has evolved into the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. Their mission is to promote optimal health through prevention and safe and effective treatment of the causes of illness by supporting physicians and other professionals in serving the public through education about the interaction between humans and their environment.

American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief and observation that when the human body is given the correct natural materials and energies, it possesses enormous power to heal itself. Unlike conventional MDs, naturopathic physicians strongly emphasize disease prevention, lifestyle change, and optimizing wellness.
After earning a standard undergraduate degree, including premedical requirements, such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and physics, future naturopathic physicians go on to a 4-year graduate level, accredited naturopathic school of medicine, where, upon graduation, they earn an ND degree. NDs receive training in all the same sciences as MDs, but with less emphasis on drugs, radiation, and surgery, and more emphasis on nutrition, bio-identical hormones, botanical remedies, manipulation, homeopathy, acupuncture, psychology, and other holistic and nontoxic therapies. Before licensure, naturopathic physicians must complete at least 4,000 hours of study in specified subject areas and then pass a series of rigorous professional board exams.
Although naturopathic physicians can be found in every US state and Canadian province, they’re currently licensed by state boards only in Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia, as well as the US territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. In Canada, naturopaths are licensed in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. (Naturopathic physicians are allowed to prescribe BHRT in some states, but not all.)
To locate a naturopathic physician, contact the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) at:

Osteopathic Physicians
After earning an undergraduate degree, doctors of osteopathic medicine graduate from a 4-year osteopathic medical school with a DO degree. Osteopaths’ training and accreditation is also similar to that which medical doctors receive.
Most osteopaths are primary-care physicians, but many specialize in such areas as internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, radiology, or pathology. Residencies in these areas typically require an additional 2 to 6 years of training beyond medical school.
Although many DOs are members of the AMA, generally they differ from MDs in their emphasis on the “whole person” as well as on a preventive approach to the practice of medicine. Rather than treating (ie, suppressing) specific symptoms, as most conventional “allopathic” MDs are usually taught to do, DOs are trained to focus on the body’s various systems – particularly the musculoskeletal system – and how they interact with each other. Although DOs can and do prescribe conventional drugs, and many practice in a way that is indistinguishable from the average AMA member, in general they are more likely to be open to and knowledgeable about natural remedies, including BHRT.
Osteopaths are licensed to practice medicine and prescribe drugs in all US states and Canadian provinces. To find an osteopath, a good starting point is the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or the Canadian Osteopathic Association (COA). The American Osteopathic Association can be contacted at:

Other Good Sources of Information about Bio-Identical Hormones
Two new medical organizations dedicated to furthering bio-identical hormone research and prescribing have recently formed:
International Hormone Society
The International Hormone Society (IHS) has two major goals: 1) to make the public aware of the importance and availability of doctors specializing in the medical science of hormone deficiencies or excesses and in the medicine of aging; and 2) to work within the medical community to bring the “medicine of aging” to a more prominent level of utilization in the various medical specialties.
IHS collects and summarizes significant data with respect to the safe use of hormone therapies. This includes the most recent advances in applied hormone therapies utilizing human growth hormone, DHEA, melatonin, thyroid, testosterone, estrogens, progesterone, and others.
The best way to contact the IHS is through their website: www.intlhormonesociety.org.
The Bio-Identical Hormone Society
An excellent source of high-level medical information about BHRT is the Bio-Identical Hormone Society. BHS was founded on the medical imperative to provide reliable and predictive body chemistry management centered on hormone analysis, quality interpretation, and bio-identical hormone management. BHS is devoted to administering bio-identical hormone science to the individual patient with the express goal of naturally optimizing body chemistry to age, lifestyle, and personal goals. Another goal is to provide physicians with the best testing methods, to equip them with the ability to prescribe bio-identical hormones with high specificity and confidence, and to understand the pros and cons of hormone therapy.
The BHS website is the most complete source of literature support for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy available anywhere. The BHS document archive is an easy-to-explore repository of current thought, published science, and clinical insights on BHRT. It includes the most extensive and up-to-date collection of relevant full-length articles and abstracts, many of which are contributed by BHS members.
BHS also sponsors regular seminars where doctors and pharmacists can learn about the latest BHRT dosing guidelines developed over the last 25 years. The seminar faculty includes the author (JVW) and other knowledgeable physicians.
Access the BHS at their website: www.bioidenticalhormonesociety.com.
American Association for Health Freedom
The AAHF is a division of the Health Freedom Foundation (HFF), a nonprofit organization that promotes access to integrative medicine, dietary supplements, and, of course, bio-identical hormones. AAHF has been particularly effective in the political realms of lobbying and litigating. Their website is an excellent source of news regarding the politics of BHRT and other areas of natural and natural/alternative/integrative medicine. They also provide a search engine for locating physicians who prescribe BHRT.

Women in Balance
Women in Balance (WIB) is a national, nonprofit association of women, doctors, health care professionals and organizations dedicated to helping women achieve hormone balance. Women in Balance was founded to educate women and the health care community about hormone imbalance, and its impact on a woman’s health and well-being as she ages. WIB was born out of the desire to be a trusted health resource for women over 40 who are experiencing the natural hormonal transitions of perimenopause and menopause.
They strongly believe that hormone balance is essential to a woman’s overall health and well-being, greatly affecting her longevity and quality of life. The organization is dedicated to empowering women to take charge of their hormone health. They are dedicated to the proposition that the no “one dose fits all” approach to achieving hormone balance and optimal health for women. Ideally, each woman should work with a qualified health professional to determine her unique health needs. If hormones are recommended, bioidentical hormones should be used only in physiological doses.
WIB also provides a physician-finder to help you locate physicians and healthcare providers in your area who practice in accord with their pronciples.
